Placement Post: Sharika with MPP Marit Stiles
For my opposition placement, I had the pleasure of working with MPP Marit Stiles, the Ontario NDP Member for Davenport and Official Opposition Critic for Education. As one of the most diverse ridings in Toronto, Davenport is home to vibrant communities representing different cultures and heritage, including a large Portuguese population. MPP Stiles was first elected in 2018 after serving as Davenport’s Toronto District School Board Trustee and working as a community advocate.
During my placement, I was responsible for various legislative tasks including writing member’s statements, preparing speaking notes for debates and speeches, and other work related to tabling bills and motions. I also contributed to weekly community newsletters, participated in stakeholder meetings, and corresponded with Davenport constituents. I had the opportunity to learn about a wide range of policy issues affecting Davenport residents and Ontarians – from housing to animal welfare to education and more.
In her role as Education Critic, MPP Stiles was responsible for keeping the government accountable on education policies and initiatives. Over the course of my placement, I had the opportunity to engage with a wide range of education stakeholders and learn about the complex challenges facing Ontario’s public education system. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools throughout the province faced unprecedented learning disruptions, heightened mental health challenges and other barriers to facilitating safe in-person learning. I gained valuable experience in helping the office with one of their main priorities: advocating for the safe reopening of schools and the provision of adequate supports for students and education workers.
It was such a rewarding experience to work with this office! A big thank you to MPP Stiles, Ashley, Greg, and Peter for welcoming me to the team!
