For my government placement, I had the privilege of interning for MPP Steve Pinsonneault. MPP Pinsonneault represents the beautiful riding of Lambton–Kent–Middlesex. MPP Pinsonneault serves as the Deputy Whip, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Rural Affairs, and the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Emergency Preparedness.

I was particularly drawn to MPP Pinsonneault’s office given his background as a municipal councillor and his rural affairs portfolio. Having grown up and studied in Toronto, I entered my placement with a keen interest in learning about the needs and lives of rural Ontarians firsthand. I wanted this to be my opportunity to broaden my knowledge of Ontario.

One of the most meaningful parts of my placement was visiting the constituency office in Lambton–Kent–Middlesex. Michelle walked me through the ins and outs of providing compassionate service to constituents. I also had a driving tour courtesy of Arlene, where I saw the diversity of the riding, including its agricultural sector, tourism industry, and strong community ties.

At Queen’s Park, I shadowed MPP Pinsonneault’s Executive Assistant, Jeanue Chung, and gained insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of legislative staff. I learned about the role of a parliamentary assistant, how MPPs engage with ministries, and how staff coordinate tours, communications, and meetings. This experience showed me how complex the relationships behind an MPP’s schedule can be, and how Executive Assistants are truly a jack of all trades in managing it all.

I cannot thank MPP Pinsonneault and his entire office enough for providing such a thoughtful and well-rounded experience. Especially Jeanue, Michelle, and Arlene; thank you for supporting my learning. Through the breadth of experiences I had during this placement, I’ve developed a strong understanding of public service and legislative affairs!
