In the fall, we had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Gary Clement, Director of Government Relations from TD Bank Group. Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, with more than 85,000 employees in offices around the world, The Toronto-Dominion Bank and
its subsidiaries are collectively known as TD Bank Group (TD). They offer a full range of financial products and services to approximately 22 million customers worldwide. TD is also one of OLIP’s major sponsors and we are thankful for their continued support of the program.
During our meeting, we were excited to hear highlights from Mr. Clement’s career, specifically his transition from the public sector to the private sector as well as his experience working as a former federal political staffer on Parliament Hill! It was fascinating to learn from Mr. Clement since he has worked as a Senior Advisor under both former premiers Harris’ and Eves’ governments. Mr. Clement shared with us the importance of government relations and lessons he has carried forward from his time in the public service.
Mr. Clement also shared with us the importance of relationships and having measured discussions – regardless of which side of the political spectrum individuals may subscribe to. In the ups and downs of business and politics, it is important to always have supportive people in your corner. He further stressed that the knowledge and skills we are gaining through OLIP now, can help us navigate whichever careers we choose to enter, and can be transferable in many creative ways.
We want to sincerely thank Mr. Clement for his openness about the role of government relations and his experiences in politics. One major piece of advice being “you’re only as successful as the team”, made a lasting impression on the interns, and will be remembered as we continue our journeys.
