For my government placement, I am thrilled to be working with MPP Bill Walker who represents the people of Bruce – Grey – Owen Sound. It has been an exciting couple of months with MPP Walker. At the start of my placement, MPP Walker was appointed Deputy Speaker. Assisting him in this position gives me the chance to learn a lot about House proceedings and the role of the Speaker.
Sitting as a Member of the Legislature for ten years has made MPP Walker a fountain of knowledge, and I am continually learning about the workings of Queen’s Park. I am looking forward to spending time in the riding once the House adjourns in December and to learning about Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. As someone who has lived in the GTHA their whole life, it has been eye-opening to gain the perspective of constituents from a more rural riding and the issues that they face such as access to energy.
One thing that I really appreciate about my placement is MPP Walker’s willingness to involve me in his work whether it is stakeholder meetings, in his role as Deputy Speaker, or just the day-to-day business of being an MPP. A highlight for me was helping MPP Walker and his team work on a Private Member’s motion. It was exciting to see the project from start to finish and to be in the Chamber while the Members debated the motion. A big thank you to Karen, Chris, Lisa, and Julie who work from MPP Walker’s constituency office in Owen Sound for the warm welcome!
