For my first placement, I am working with MPP Logan Kanapathi. He is a Progressive Conservative Member and represents the riding of Markham-Thornhill. As one of Canada’s most diverse ridings, Markham-Thornhill is home to vibrant cultures and a wealth of rich histories and traditions. MPP Kanapathi was elected in 2018 after serving as a Markham City Councillor for over twelve years. He currently serves as the Chair of the Standing Committee on General Government.
Working in MPP Kanapathi’s office is fast-paced and dynamic – there is never a dull moment. So far in this placement, I have been assisting MPP Kanapathi with all of his legislative affairs. This involves preparing briefings, Member’s Statements, questions, talking points, and research on various policy issues.
I have also had the opportunity to take part in constituent outreach through stakeholder meetings, newsletters, and engaging with constituents over the phone. It has been an eye-opening experience to learn about the issues affecting residents, many of which have been exacerbated by the pandemic.
For example, stakeholders frequently raise the issue of understaffing in the health care sector. This is an issue that MPP Kanapathi has been working to address. To this end, I am working on researching pathways to employment for international medical graduates in Ontario. I am building on the wonderful research done by MPP Kanapathi’s previous OLIP intern, Amelia Boughn.
It has been rewarding to see and be a part of the work at MPP Kanapathi’s office. A big thank you to MPP Kanapathi, his Executive Assistant, Lavanya, and the staff at the Markham-Thornhill constituency office for welcoming me to the team!
