I am delighted to be placed with MPP John Fraser for my opposition placement. MPP Fraser represents Ottawa South, a riding in the heart of the nation’s capital. He is the Liberal House Leader, and the Critic for Health, Long-Term Care, Seniors Affairs & Accessibility, Intergovernmental Affairs, and Labour.
After first being elected in 2013, MPP Fraser has served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health, and from 2018 to 2020, MPP Fraser served as the Interim Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.
In this placement, I have been able to hone in on my research and writing skills as I work my way through drafting Member’s Statements, questions, policy briefs, news releases, and lead the creation of the community newsletter every week. I have also joined MPP Fraser in stakeholder meetings, many of which have been centered on community initiatives in the riding or with provincial healthcare groups.
Most notably, my experience in MPP Fraser’s office has taught me the importance of being nimble and adaptable in the Legislature and the value in listening to a wide array of opinions on different policy issues.
It has also been fascinating to learn more about Ontario’s health infrastructure, particularly in the realm of palliative and long-term care. I was also privileged to visit the riding and hear more from constituents about the issues they care about most. I was given a very special tour of the riding, and its many delicious Shawarma spots!
