This spring, I had the privilege of working with Kristyn Wong-Tam, MPP for Toronto Centre. I got to see first-hand the work the office did as the Shadow Minister to the Attorney General and learned a great deal about Ontario’s corrections and court systems as well as the province’s justice legislation.
I helped gather stakeholder engagement for hearings by the Standing Committee on Justice Policy and had the chance to familiarize myself with various law organizations and representation groups. Through this, I learned about emerging constitutional right considerations in Ontario’s justice policy and had the opportunity to hear the firsthand perspectives of lawyers, police officers, and justice-involved civil and research institutions. As a Criminology major and someone with a strong interest in law and justice systems, I found the work fascinating and engaging.
I also supported MPP Wong-Tam in their capacity as a community leader. I accompanied them to diverse community events, from Iftars during Ramadan to Pride events, local festivals, and grand openings.
I helped organized two town halls on endometriosis and intimate partner violence respectively and supported residents through research and correspondence.
I had a wonderful time with MPP Wong-Tam and their office. Thank you for an excellent placement!
