I am very excited to be working with MPP Norm Miller for my first placement! He represents the riding of Parry Sound-Muskoka in the heart of Ontario’s beautiful cottage country. This riding is unique because, due to its large seasonal tourism industry, the population of the riding doubles in the summertime. Mr. Miller has served as the MPP for this riding since 2001, so he brings a wealth of knowledge about local issues to Queen’s Park. I am excited to be learning from such an experienced and respected politician.
On my first day in the (virtual) office, I really hit the ground running: I started drafting a 15 minute speech for MPP Miller about one of his Private Member’s Bills (PMB) for a committee hearing the following week! A few weeks later, the bill was ordered for third reading, and I wrote an even longer speech for the House, using materials from committee and submissions from constituents. This was very exciting because Private Member’s Bills don’t often make it to third reading! The bill received Royal Assent on December 8, 2020.
MPP Miller has already introduced his next PMB, so I am eager to learn more about how PMBs are developed and debated in the coming months. I have also had the chance to work on a communications plan to help raise awareness and support for the new PMB. In doing this, I am trying to find new ways to engage with the constituents of Parry Sound-Muskoka, but also people across the province, especially young adults.
I want to thank MPP Miller and his staff for welcoming me to the team: Lesley, the Executive assistant, and Jess, Karen, Jessie and Christina at the constituency offices. It is such a pleasure to work alongside you all, and I am looking forward to a productive and educational term!
