Partner Blog: Our Meeting With Counsel Public Affairs

In March, our cohort had the opportunity to meet with the Team at Counsel Public Affairs. Counsel, founded in 2004, is one of Canada’s leading public affairs agencies, specializing in government relations, strategic communications, and integrated campaigns. Counsel is a multi-partisan firm that has worked with a broad range of clients – from multinational companies, national associations, and government organizations to not-for-profits, start-ups, and individuals. They often engage with clients and multi-jurisdictional issues. Unlike some firms, Counsel does not specialize in one policy area. The scope and services of Counsel allows them to approach issues across Canada from multiple angles. Given the vibrancy and atmosphere at Counsel, their dedication to serving their clients remains evident. The firm’s motto is “Unconventional. Driven. Successful.” They employ innovative and credible methods to bridge the gap between those inside and outside of government, bringing decades of experience from both the public and private sectors. 

The team at Counsel was very gracious to provide us interns with advice as consider the direction of our careers post OLIP. They advised us to leverage our skills acquired through the internship and present our value to the labour market. The team stressed the value of being politically informed and remaining curious as we continue navigating and building our careers. 

In addition to our engaging meeting with several members of Counsel’s team, we had the opportunity to appreciate some stunning views from the office building, including stunning panoramic views of downtown Toronto, the CN Tower, and midtown. Thank you to the entire team at Counsel for meeting with us on a Friday afternoon and for being so generous with your time.
