On October 25th, the interns were lucky to have Steve Paikin join us for one of our OLIP Friday meetings. He spoke to us about his extensive career working within the Ontario politics scene as a columnist for various outlets until he eventually joined TVO, where he has been for the past 32 years. Paikin co-hosts TVO’s flagship show ‘The Agenda’ in addition to the popular #OntPoli podcast and has served as a moderator of multiple political debates of both the federal and provincial varieties.
It was interesting to hear about Paikin’s reflections on the changing landscape of media and about the relationship between media and politicians. Most notably, Paikin spoke about the value of reporting in a non-partisan way in that it allows the audience to form their own opinions on issues using the information offered. This anecdote from Paikin reflected the strength of non-partisanship, which as OLIP interns we know firsthand due to benefiting from the ability to work across party lines and seeing different sides on issues of concern at Queen’s Park.
Overall, it was a fascinating conversation that I still find myself reflecting on and I extend thanks to Steve Paikin and our Meetings committee chairs for making this happen!
