On November 5th, the OLIP interns were fortunate to meet Mike Schreiner, the MPP for Guelph since 2018. Being the Leader and sole elected Member of the Green Party of Ontario, MPP Schreiner offered an incredibly unique perspective.
MPP Schreiner was interested in politics from a young age. He pursued a career as an entrepreneur and activist but decided to run for public office to make a bigger difference in his community and in the province. As someone who was passionate about the environment in his non-profit work, he decided to continue to pursue environmental issues as an MPP.
MPP Schreiner spoke to us extensively about the role of an independent MPP. As the only Member from the Green Party of Ontario, he is responsible for all the critic portfolios. He believes that as an independent member, it is vital for him to work across party lines to implement effective policy. Overall, he shared his goals and visions with us and stressed the importance of putting policy ahead of partisan politics. He stated that this has been key to his role as an MPP.
We are incredibly thankful that MPP Schreiner was able to take time out of his busy schedule to speak with us. We learned so much about environmental policy and how an independent member can make an impact in the Chamber.
