Our Meeting with the Leader of the Official Opposition, Marit Stiles

The OLIP interns had the pleasure of sitting down with Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition NDP, to discuss the role of the Opposition and MPP Stiles’ transition to becoming Leader. We thoroughly enjoyed the discussion of how to engage people in provincial politics and how to motivate people who do not vote, to vote come election day. We had a great conversation about how to target the thought that ‘politics and governance doesn’t impact my life’ and the power of civic education.

We also had the opportunity to ask about what the transition is like from MPP to Leader and learned that MPPs spend much more time in the Chamber (i.e. on house duty and listening to debates) while a party leader has many more obligations outside of the Chamber and in the community. MPP Stiles highlighted the importance of actively listening and asking questions when having conversations with stakeholders and community members, to understand more about various issues.

Thank you to Marit Stiles for taking the time to meet with us and answering all our questions, we enjoyed meeting with you and we gained many insights!
