In early October, the OLIP interns had the distinct honour of meeting the Right Honourable David Peterson, the 20th Premier of Ontario who served from 1985 to 1990. During our conversation, Mr. Peterson walked us through his career journey, sharing thoughtful insights about the experiences that shaped his path to becoming Premier.

His story began in sales, followed by the founding of a wholesale electronics business, his election to London City Council, and eventually his entry into provincial politics with the Ontario Liberal Party. We were fascinated to hear his reflections on leadership and political life. Our discussion explored the circumstantial nature of political leadership, the value of building consensus, and the qualities that define an effective leader.

We also touched on key moments from his career, including major trade involvements, Canada’s economic history and outlook, and his perspective on Canada’s evolving relationship with the United States. He also shared his experience as Chancellor at the University of Toronto, a role he described with genuine fondness.

A highlight of the conversation was hearing his thoughts on the emotional and mental aspects of working in politics. Mr. Peterson emphasized the importance of not becoming a “worryer,” staying resilient when mistakes inevitably happen, and grounding oneself in gratitude. As young people preparing to enter the political world, this guidance resonated deeply with us.

We are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to meet with the Right Honourable David Peterson. His wisdom, candour, and generosity left a lasting impression on all of us. As we step forward into the many opportunities ahead, we will carry his lessons with us and remain appreciative of this unique experience!
