2nd MPP Placements: Sayyidah & MPP Steve Clark

For my government placement I was fortunate to be placed with MPP Steve Clark—member for Leeds—Grenville—Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. He has represented this riding at the Ontario legislature since 2010! At the time of my placement, MPP Clark served as the Government House Leader and Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier. 

When the House was in session, I gained firsthand exposure to the agenda-setting of government and enhanced my understanding of legislative procedure and standing orders. The Government House Leader’s Office (GHLO) oversees legislative proceedings, including in the House and in committees. During my placement, I shadowed MPP Clark, attended meetings, and accompanied him to the media studio. While this was a shorter placement, I enjoyed being able to sit in the under press and witness live debates, interact with members and ask many questions. I also had the chance to prepare briefing documents for Private Members’ Public Business, including motions and bills that were being introduced.  

During the May constituency week, I had the chance to visit the riding located along the St. Lawrence River! I was glad to accompany MPP Clark in touring the Cardinal Health manufacturing facility in Gananoque along with municipal and federal representatives, meeting with a local organization advocating for people with disabilities and developmental challenges, and attending an economic development summit planning meeting at the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. As someone who lives in Toronto, it was particularly meaningful to learn about the key issues that impact individuals in rural communities, especially as it pertains to accessing primary care. Outside of meetings, visiting the constituency office, and learning about the priorities of the community, I visited the famous Brockville Railway tunnel and strolled the waterfront. If you are ever driving towards Brockville, I highly recommend you take the 1000 Islands Parkway, a beautiful scenic drive along the water!
