2nd MPP Placements: Annie & MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam

For my opposition placement, I had the honour of working with MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam, a member of the official opposition and the representative for Toronto Centre. MPP Wong-Tam is also the Shadow Attorney General with responsibility for 2SLGBTQI+ issues. 

The riding of Toronto Centre is home to many diverse and densely populated neighbourhoods. Coming from a small town, it was eye-opening to learn about the issues and interests of stakeholders in such a profoundly urban riding. As a longtime City Councilor prior to their work in provincial politics, MPP Wong-Tam generously shared their extensive knowledge about the city of Toronto during our travels to various community events - I learned so much about the city and the distinct challenges associated with urban ridings! 

In this office, I conducted research on various topics related to MPP Wong-Tam’s Shadow Minister portfolio and for Private Member’s Bills (PMBs). Primarily, I conducted a research project related to MPP Wong-Tam's PMB to declare intimate partner violence an epidemic in Ontario. I gained a stronger understanding of how MPPs work to advance policy interests while in opposition and the critical role of comprehensive stakeholder consultation. While the House was sitting, I was grateful for the opportunity to further develop my speech writing skills, assisting with various speeches for MPP Wong-Tam and preparing briefing notes on bills being presented in the House. I also contributed to communications initiatives, developing visual and written content for social media. 

Given the proximity of the riding to Queen’s Park, I was able to spend ample time at the constituency office, witnessing firsthand how MPPs balance and bridge their legislative and constituency responsibilities. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Sasha, Loudes, Elena, Varshaa, Amontaye, Arhaan, Sarah, and Winston for welcoming me to the constituency office and onto their team! 

My gratitude goes to MPP Wong-Tam, Emma, and Ben for providing a vast range of rewarding learning opportunities. MPP Wong-Tam’s intentionality and commitment to their community was a pleasure to experience. Thank you for generously welcoming me to the office, sharing your knowledge, and facilitating my learning!
