1st MPP Placements: Annie & MPP Laura Smith

For my first placement, I had the opportunity to work with MPP Laura Smith! MPP Smith represents the riding of Thornhill and is the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, as well as a member of the Standing Committee on Social Policy and the Standing Committee on Government Agencies. Throughout my time in MPP Smith’s office I had the pleasure of observing her true dedication to hard work and to her constituents.

I am so grateful to have gained invaluable experience drafting numerous member’s statements, speeches, and remarks, as well as insight into the research and preparation process of Private Members’ Bills (PMBs). Over the course of my placement, I witnessed firsthand many stages of effectively developing a PMB, from committee review to receiving Royal Assent. I really enjoyed supporting the legislative work of the office and contributing to various communication initiatives.

After the House rose in December, the work certainly did not stop! I enjoyed the chance to spend significant time in Thornhill at the constituency office. Here, I gained a deeper understanding of the unique issues and interests of the Thornhill community. Through this experience I learned more about how MPP’s manage their legislative, constituency, and ministerial responsibilities, and how these roles can form one another. I also gained perspective on the importance of community engagement and connection in policymaking. In Thornhill I joined MPP Smith and the team in visiting several local businesses and attending various announcements and events, including a pre-budget consultation that took place in the riding. MPP Smith kindly gave me tours of the riding and I enjoyed some Thornhill staples – including many excellent lunches from the deli!

My sincerest thanks go to MPP Smith for providing such a diverse range of learning opportunities and formative experiences during my government placement. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Delia and the entire team for graciously welcoming me into the office and truly helping to shape my experience.
