For my second placement, I am working in the office of MPP Mike Schreiner who represents the constituents of Guelph. As the Leader of the Green Party of Ontario and the sole Green Party representative in the Legislature, MPP Schreiner sits as an independent member. I was placed with a government MPP in my last placement, so the transition to working in an independent opposition office has provided me with a unique perspective of the legislative process and collaboration among independent members.
MPP Schreiner represents Guelph, a riding outside of the GTA that serves as a hub for agriculture, food and sustainability thought leaders and innovation. It is home to the University of Guelph, which boasts a renowned agricultural sciences program. Through this placement, I have had the opportunity to better understand the research and advocacy being conducted by community groups across Guelph and the concerns that are top of mind for residents.
Working in MPP Schreiner’s office has allowed me to gain a plethora of experience. As Leader of the Green Party, MPP Schreiner takes part in the media scrum following Question Period. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at the media cycle at Queen's Park on a daily basis has been a real highlight! In addition to this, I have meaningfully contributed to MPP Schreiner’s office by attending staff meetings, drafting briefing notes and debate remarks, and analyzing newly tabled legislation.
I want to thank MPP Schreiner for offering me the opportunity to work in his dynamic office and for his excellent guidance throughout my internship placement. I am also very grateful to the staff at Queen's Park and at the Guelph Constituency Office who have welcomed me to the team. Thank you to Bianca, Sam, Darren, Anna, Lilla, Shelley and Candice for their ongoing support.
