The interns “geared up” for a meeting with the Ontario Society of Professional Engineering (OSPE), Ontario's advocacy body for engineering and one of the only provincial advocacy bodies for engineers in Canada.
It was wonderful to speak with Paola Cetares, Director of Public Affairs, and Lydia Batty, Public Relations Coordinator, about their experiences before joining OSPE and the work they do translating technical engineering information to digestible non-partisan content for their political audiences. It is no easy feat- their members are at the cutting edge of technology, something that is not always easily digestible by political audiences.
OPSE’s work brings together thousands of engineers from across the province to continue creating innovation in energy, water management, infrastructure, transport, and any sector that could benefit from engineers (hint: it’s all of them!) through their subcommittees and research that bring together experts in the field. It was also wonderful to hear about efforts for further inclusion of women and newcomers in the field as the profession grows, both at the student and professional level. Ontario is always in need of more engineers, and OSPE is working hard to make sure that growth is done in a sustainable ands progressive way, with proper supports and opportunities for learning provided to newcomers in the field.
Thank you Lydia and Paola for your time and kindness, it was a pleasure to speak with you both. And a huge thank you to OSPE for your continued support of our program- we are thankful for partnerships like ours!
