The OLIP interns had the privilege of meeting with John Parker and Tom Robertson of the Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy. The Churchill Society is a non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting, protecting, and strengthening Canada’s parliamentary democracy through education, dialogue, and public engagement. Drawing inspiration from the legacy of Sir Winston Churchill, the Society works to foster a deeper understanding of responsible government, parliamentary institutions, and civic leadership.
During our meeting, we discussed the foundational principles of parliamentary democracy and the importance of preserving democratic norms in an evolving political landscape. Mr. Parker and Mr. Robertson shared insights into the Society’s work in supporting research, hosting educational initiatives, and encouraging thoughtful public discourse on the health of Canada’s democratic institutions.
A significant portion of our conversation focused on Sir Winston Churchill himself and the role he played in defending and promoting parliamentary democracy during moments of profound global crisis. Mr. Parker and Mr. Robertson emphasized how Churchill’s example continues to shape contemporary discussions about democratic resilience and civic responsibility.
We would like to extend a sincere thank-you to John Parker and Tom Robertson for taking the time to meet with us and share their expertise. We also greatly appreciate the invitation to the Annual Churchill Dinner, where we enjoyed celebrating the contributions of those who strengthen and support Canada’s democracy. Finally, we express our gratitude to the Churchill Society for its continued support of the OLIP programme!
