In September, the OLIP interns had the opportunity to meet with our Partner, the Canada Nickel Company (CNC), for an insightful presentation on their vision, operations, and the role they are playing in Ontario’s mineral industry. We had a thoughtful conversation about the future of nickel mining, the significance of sustainable practices, and how Ontario is shaping itself within intergovernmental mineral trade agreements.

The CNC team, encompassing of Mark Selby, CEO and Director; Sydney Oakes, Director of Indigenous Relations and Public Affairs; and Pierre-Phillipe Dupont, Vice President of Sustainability, shared their expertise and perspectives on the organization. They shed light on Net Zero prospects, the broader goals of the industry, and the increasing global demand for nickel.

A key theme that emerged from the conversation was sustainability. CNC emphasized their commitment to environmentally responsible mining practices and minimizing environmental impact to promote long-term growth. Our discussion delved into how collaboration among government bodies, industry leaders, and Indigenous communities, is paving the way for innovative solutions to ensure both economic growth and environmental stewardship.

As the world shifts toward green technologies, Ontario’s vast mineral reserves have positioned the province as a critical player in the global supply chain. We learned how CNC is contributing to this transition.

We want to thank Mark, Sydney, and Pierre-Phillipe for meeting with us and sharing their perspectives on this topic of interest. We deeply appreciate the Canada Nickel Company’s continued support of OLIP, and their valued partnership with the programme.
