On March 17, 2023, we toured the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) at Osgoode Hall. Many of us have a keen interest in pursuing a career in law and the visit helped to better understand how lawyers are called to the Bar, how the LSO is regulated and its history.
Founded in 1797, the LSO predates the province of Ontario and is responsible for the self-regulation of lawyers and paralegals in Ontario. It currently regulates 50 000+ lawyers, has the authority to establish the standards for admission into the profession of law and discipline lawyers who do not meet its ethical and/or competency standards. We also discussed some of the issues the LSO is facing, namely the licensing of foreign-lawyers and updating every member on changes in the legal profession.
We would like to sincerely thank Sheena, Carol and Jason, and the entire Law Society of Ontario for their generous support, advice and unique perspectives.
