Keen to refine our understanding of provincial leadership, the OLIP interns enjoyed the privilege of meeting with MPP John Fraser, Interim Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.

First elected as MPP for Ottawa South in 2013, and having served as Interim Leader in 2018, 2022, and concurrently, MPP Fraser brought a wealth of experience from his long tenure in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Our conversation explored leadership in practice, the evolving landscape of provincial politics, and the importance of adaptability in public service. Drawing from his critic portfolio, we also discussed education and the role it plays in shaping opportunity and long-term prospects across the province.

A particularly meaningful takeaway was his perspective on the Legislative Assembly. MPP Fraser described Queen’s Park as more than a space of opposition; rather, he depicted it as a place where colleagues across party lines can unite through their shared responsibility to serve Ontarians to the best of their ability. His reflections offered a profound reminder, one he credited to a former Page, of the value of respect, collaboration, and purpose in political life.

As a long-time supporter of OLIP, and a generous mentor to many generations of interns over the years, his continued engagement and encouragement mean a great deal to our programme.

Thank you, MPP Fraser, for your time, guidance, and ongoing support!
