During the election period, we had the pleasure of being placed with the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario (OAG). The OAG is an independent, non-partisan office of the Ontario Legislature. The office serves the Legislative Assembly and the people of Ontario by conducting independent financial transactions audits, as well as performance audits. The primary objective of the office is to track government finances and provide an independent review of the performance and accountability of public sector institutions.
We had the opportunity to work as part of research units that support performance audits. Performance audits evaluate how well an auditee manages and administers its programs, services, and activities and assists in maintaining accountability for the government’s stewardship of public funds. As part of this work, we were able to delve into the depths of ministerial files and conduct jurisdictional scans to see how services differ across Canadian jurisdictions and internationally.
We would like to thank our supervisors Leah Wilson and Andrew Train for their mentorship and guidance throughout our placement. Thank you to the OAG for taking on two OLIP interns during the election, we are grateful to have spent some time in your office!
