Over the past month, I had the pleasure of completing my Legislative Assembly placement with the Canadian Parliamentary Review (CPR). The CPR is a non-partisan quarterly publication for the Canadian Region of the Commonwealth Parliamentarians Association. It fosters academic inquiry into Canadian parliamentary institutions at the provincial, territorial, and federal levels.
During my placement, I had the opportunity to contribute to the Winter 2025 theme issue on inclusive parliaments. Through this project, I had the unique opportunity to coordinate two roundtable discussions, and I look forward to moderating them in the near future. The first will bring together women Speakers from across provincial legislatures and the Senate of Canada. The second will convene LGBTQ+ parliamentarians from across all levels of government.
In addition, I wrote a short-form article, published in the “Sketches of Parliament” feature, in which I examined the legacy of the premier portraits displayed on the second floor of Queen’s Park. In particular, I focused on the evolution of the symbolic objects incorporated into many of the portraits and how these personal items shape the way each premier is depicted and remembered.
As my placement comes to a close, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Will Stos, the CPR Editor, for his guidance and support. Thank you for giving me creative freedom and welcoming me so enthusiastically into CPR. Further, I would like to extend a big thank you to Tiffany Riberio and the Information Services branch for welcoming me into their office. Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to all those who generously shared their perspectives with me through meetings and interviews. I am appreciative of this experience, which provided me with first-hand insights into the field of parliamentary research and publication. I look forward to applying the knowledge and skills I have gained in my role as an OLIP intern and in future endeavours.
