It was a privilege to be placed with PC MPP Rudy Cuzzetto of Mississauga-Lakeshore for my government placement. MPP Cuzzetto is the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy and Mines and a member of the Standing Committee on the Interior. I joined MPP Cuzzetto’s office at a critical time for his portfolio as energy and mining became important topics of policy debate in light of recent geopolitical developments. Thanks to his ministerial responsibilities, I was able to attend meetings with important stakeholders in the energy sector and gained a deeper understanding of energy policy that affects Ontario’s industries.
Despite the short legislative session, it felt busier than usual due to the condensed schedule. Throughout my placement, I had various opportunities to draft member’s statements, prepare briefing notes, schedule meetings, research stakeholders and perform other spontaneous responsibilities. I am incredibly grateful for working with MPP Cuzzetto and his experienced Executive Assistant Michael Smith. Thank you for your continuous mentorship and support during my placement.
Constituency visits are generally rare occasions for interns because traveling to the riding can be complicated. Fortunately, the riding of Mississauga-Lakeshore is in the GTA, and commuting to the constituency office in Port Credit was straightforward. I am grateful for my time spent in the riding as it allowed me to observe how MPP Cuzzetto builds and maintains a strong relationship with his constituents. He makes time for community events and puts in a conscious effort to honour individuals who make a contribution. I also gained a deeper perspective into how a constituency office can truly serve as a liaison between residents and government services.
During my constituency visits, I was able to assist with a wide assortment of tasks including attending events, creating scrolls, and corresponding with constituents. I really appreciate the different opportunities to attend community events that deepened my understanding of the proverb “All politics is local.” I want to thank MPP Cuzzetto for welcoming me into his office and his constituency staff Dorothy, Jack, Joanna, Josh, Jovica, Nick, Paula, and Zahra for supporting me in my work and helping me acclimate to the constituency office. I enjoyed the opportunity to contribute a small part to the amazing work all of you do day in and day out.
