2nd MPP Placement: Noor and MPP Monica Ciriello

This past spring, I had the wonderful opportunity to work in the office of MPP Monica Ciriello, Member for Hamilton Mountain and Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministry of the Attorney General. Given my interest in pursuing a legal career, I was particularly excited to gain exposure to the Attorney General's portfolio — an office at the forefront of strengthening Ontario's justice system, supporting victims of crime, and promoting community safety. I quickly discovered a team deeply committed to serving both the people of Hamilton Mountain and Ontarians across the province.

Throughout my placement, I was involved in a wide range of legislative, policy, and community-focused initiatives centred on the Attorney General's key priority areas, including Victim Services, POA Courts, and Organized Retail Theft. At Queen's Park, I conducted research, assisted with stakeholder meetings and outreach, prepared speaking remarks for community events and celebrations, and had the opportunity to contribute to work surrounding a Private Member's Bill. Working on this Bill was a true privilege — it sought to strengthen and modernize Ontario's restraining order system, ensuring greater protections for victims of crime. These experiences provided me with invaluable insight into the legislative process and the many considerations that shape government decision-making.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my placement was the opportunity to engage directly with stakeholders and community members — from police chiefs and fire chiefs to organizations like the Salvation Army. Each conversation deepened my understanding of the issues and unmet needs that exist across Ontario's diverse communities and reinforced the value of meaningful consultation in shaping responsive, effective policy. I also attended a number of community events and announcements, including visits with local organizations, meetings with community leaders, and initiatives focused on public safety and victim support.

Working alongside MPP Ciriello was a highlight of the entire experience. Her thoughtful approach to public service and genuine commitment to her constituents were evident in every aspect of her work — whether engaging with community members, supporting local organizations, or advancing the Ministry's policy priorities. She consistently brought professionalism and a deep dedication to serving others to everything she did.

I am deeply grateful to MPP Ciriello for welcoming me into her office and for her continued support of OLIP. I would also like to thank Valerie and the entire team for their encouragement, support, and willingness to share their knowledge throughout my placement.

As my placement comes to an end, I leave with a stronger understanding of government, policymaking, and community engagement. I now also have a deeper appreciation for public service and the individuals who dedicate themselves to improving the lives of others. This experience has been an invaluable part of my OLIP journey, and one I will carry with me throughout my future studies and career. Thank you, MPP Ciriello and Valerie!
