I was fortunate to be placed with the former MPP of Parkdale—High Park, Bhutila Karpoche, for my first member’s placement. Bhutila served as a member of the Official Opposition, the Ontario NDP, as well as Critic of Affordability and GTA Issues. She also served as Deputy Speaker for the 43rd Parliament of the Ontario Legislature.

When the House was in session, I had the opportunity to work on legislative tasks including research, speech writing, drafting motions, pitching questions for question period, and assisting with preparations for Bhutila’s Private Member’s Bill on rent control, one of the many issues that she is passionate about. I also supported Bhutila with social media and communications, ensuring that constituents were informed on her advocacy in the legislature and within the community, as well as helping them keep up to date with the latest news in Ontario politics. There was never a dull moment in this office!

During constituency weeks and the adjournment period, I often visited and worked out of the riding. I engaged in correspondence with and learned about the priorities of community members. Parkdale—High Park––which has become home for many immigrants––is a politically active riding, whether it be through rent strikes, workers’ strikes, legal aid disputes, or the neigbourhood land trust. As someone who is new to Toronto, it was eye-opening to learn about the key issues that impact people in the city. I also learned the value of community-building and organizing and the critical role it plays in enacting meaningful policy. If you are ever in Parkdale, also known as Little Tibet due to the large Tibetan population and several local small businesses, I highly recommend you try momos—a Tibetan and Nepali specialty!

I would like to extend my gratitude to Bhutila, Marshelle and the entire team for their guidance and trust throughout my placement. Thank you for providing an impactful experience, challenging me to think critically and supporting my growth. I look forward to leveraging the knowledge and skills I gained from this placement to better support and serve communities. I wish Bhutila all the best as she continues to advocate for the people of Parkdale—High Park, beyond Queen’s Park!
