For my Government placement, I had the distinct privilege of serving in the office of MPP Ernie Hardeman, who represents Oxford for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.

Oxford — home to Woodstock, the "Friendly City" and Canada's dairy capital, along with Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, Norwich, Zorra, East Zorra–Tavistock, South-West Oxford, and Blandford-Blenheim — is a remarkably vibrant and picturesque county. Highway 401 cuts cleanly through its centre, carving out an east–west industrial corridor that anchors more than half the county's population. This 25-kilometre stretch links two major automotive manufacturing hubs: Toyota's assembly plant in Woodstock and General Motors' CAMI facility in Ingersoll.

Oxford's economy, beyond its industrial spine, is dominated by agriculture. Its’ 344 dairy farms, the highest-producing of any Ontario county, generate enough output to feed three million people. In Woodstock, visitors are welcomed by Springbank Snow Countess, Canada's first permanent memorial to a record-setting cow.

These are a few of several facts and figures MPP Hardeman has impressed upon me; trinkets I will treasure for a lifetime. What I appreciate most about MPP Hardeman is his groundedness, humility, integrity, and resolute devotion to the community he serves; these qualities are not only remarkable but rare. I will never forget my first day in MPP Hardeman's office, when he paused before a painting just left of his desk and traced each Oxford landmark with the unmistakable pride of someone who carries his home the way others carry heirlooms.

Beyond his natural charm, MPP Hardeman boasts the political acumen and acuity needed to bridge 'worlds of thought' with 'worlds of action.' He has an excellent grasp of policy design, feasibility, and implementation. He taught me what it takes to deliver evidence-based, public-interest policy.

I admire MPP Hardeman's drive, grit, tenacity, and steady can-do spirit. His work ethic is relentless, and his commitment to the greater good is unmistakable. After immigrating to Canada from Holland post-World War II, he settled in Oxford, where a large Dutch Protestant diaspora is located. Before entering provincial politics in 1995, he owned and operated Hardeman Feed Ltd. in Salford and served as a volunteer firefighter, retiring as Captain of the South West Oxford Fire Department.

MPP Hardeman carries a breadth and depth of public service experience at several levels of government. Prior to his election to Queen's Park in 1995, he built a formidable record in municipal leadership. He served on South West Oxford council, became Mayor from 1988 to 1994, and went on to represent Oxford as Warden, Chair of the Warden's Association of Ontario, Chair of the Rural Ontario Municipal Association, and as a board member of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.

Over his long tenure in the Ontario Legislature, he has held an extraordinary range of roles: Associate Minister of Municipal Affairs (Rural), Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, and twice Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, serving from 1999 to 2001 and again from 2018 to 2021. He now serves as Chair of the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs. Upon his re-election in 2025, MPP Hardeman became Dean of the Legislature, the longest serving member of Ontario's Provincial Parliament. First elected in 1995, he is the only sitting PC MPP who served during the Mike Harris era.

In MPP Hardeman's office, my work spanned administrative coordination, legislative research, and communications. I liaised with the constituency office, supported Private Member's Bill preparations, participated in stakeholder meetings, completed casework, crafted social media and press materials, and drafted speeches for both inside and outside the House. The opportunity to accompany MPP Hardeman to events, announcements, and receptions made the experience especially meaningful.

One of the standout moments of my placement was visiting Oxford. I spent three days in the riding, attending Remembrance Day ceremonies and Legions with MPP Hardeman. He drove me to every corner of Oxford, tracing the riding borders and explaining its character with the ease of someone who knows every fence line and back road. He showed me how to distinguish tobacco farms from dairy or beef and how to read the land for its agricultural strength. We listened to country music as he recounted his years in the Harris government, life in Opposition, the demands of Cabinet, and the subtle fault lines between federal and provincial politics. I felt free to ask anything, and MPP Hardeman always replied with a precise, measured, and deeply informed insight. Another highlight was attending the Committee sessions he chairs, where I watched Ministers including Vic Fedeli, Peter Bethlenfalvy, and Caroline Mulroney examine in detail their ministries' estimates.

I extend a special thanks to Ernie's Legislative Assistant, Jacob, for being an outstanding mentor, quickly becoming a genuine friend. I am also grateful to Ernie's fabulous constituency office—Shelley, Jennifer, and Kelly—for their kindness, warmth, and steady support throughout my placement.

This has been the most spectacular placement, and I am deeply grateful to MPP Hardeman for his mastery and luminary contributions to public life in Ontario and Canada. I am a better citizen because of him and the good people of Oxford.
