Partner Profile: OSSTF

Updated: Feb 14, 2022

Recently, the OLIP Interns virtually met with Paul Kossta from the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF). Among other topics, we discussed the struggles their members are experiencing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a union, OSSTF represents 60,000 members across 151 bargaining units across 37 districts. They represent many groups within the education sector, including secondary school teachers, university support staff, guidance counsellors, speech language pathologists, and school caretakers.

OSSTF is also focused on incorporating student voices into their discussions. In addition to representing educational staff, OSSTF also represents students and parents, and advocates for a safe and equitable school experience that is free from bias and discrimination.

Mr. Kossta used to be a teacher himself, and his love for the profession shone through when he was asked his favourite part of teaching. In his opinion, teaching is the best job in the world, and there was no better feeling than seeing a student understand a concept and having an “aha!” moment right before your eyes. It is always a pleasure to hear from someone so passionate about their field!

Thank you to Mr. Kossta and OSSTF for sharing your perspectives with us and for your continued support of OLIP!
