Placement Post- Meriem With MPP Laura Mae Lindo

Writer: OLIP InternsOLIP Interns

I am thrilled to be starting my OLIP fall placement with MPP Laura Mae Lindo, Member of Provincial Parliament for Kitchener Centre. MPP Lindo is the Official Opposition Critic for Anti-Racism and Citizenship and Immigration. She is the chair of the Official Opposition’s first Black Caucus and is a Member of the Standing Committee on Regulations and Private Bills.

My different assignments have, so far, allowed me to deepen my knowledge on a wide range of policy issues. One of my first projects was to conduct research on the state of settlement services in Ontario, and levels of investments in newcomers. It was a great way to familiarize myself with immigration Bills and reports and explore Ontario’s past and present budget plans. Today, my daily tasks include drafting letters to ministries, preparing meeting briefs, and stakeholder engagement via phone, email and/or Zoom. I also prepare daily news "round-ups" to keep the team up to date regarding the Kitchener-Waterloo region.

I have particularly enjoyed communicating with constituents and noticing how their concerns get transformed into concrete actions and how MPP Lindo’s team develops strategies to tackle these issues. Witnessing this democratic process has been eye-opening, to say the least! I have also had the chance to help organize virtual events, the most recent one being the Housing for all Rally. This event brought together local residents, advocates and community leaders in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, and the discussion revolved around the importance of developing a sustainable and affordable housing strategy.

MPP Lindo’s office environment is dynamic, innovative and friendly. I would like to thank MPP Lindo and her amazing staff, Zahra, Julie, and Carly for their warm welcome. I look forward to spending the next few months in your office!
