For Massimo’s second placement, he worked with MPP France Gélinas, NDP Shadow Minister of Health and Francophone Affairs and representative for the Nickel Belt. Massimo had an incredible experience in MPP Gélinas’ office, operating under the guidance of herself and her Executive Assistant Damien Waddell. Massimo was able to work on a broad range of profiles and projects, with a special emphasis on communications efforts both within and outside the legislature.

Speech writing and research assistance were primary responsibilities. Massimo had the opportunity to assist with member statements, questions for question period, and debates by helping to brainstorm and write some of the speeches that MPP Gélinas gave in the House.

Massimo was also able to become fully immersed in the process of social media outreach, helping with video scripts and developing his filming and editing skills by putting together both short and long-form videos to help members of the riding to understand important current events in the area and at the legislature, as well as to spread awareness about important organizations, groups and issues.

Massimo was fortunate enough to be able to visit the riding, travelling up north to just outside the Sudbury area where he met the team at the constituency office and learned more about their work to provide assistance to northern communities, who have their own unique needs. During the trip, MPP Gélinas was gracious to host Massimo in her home, showing him the natural beauty and vibrance of the area. Since the Nickel Belt is so large, MPP Gélinas makes accessibility a core focus of her work as their representative, dedicating time to visiting the communities of her riding and hearing their concerns. Massimo joined her on these visits, travelling to the communities of Gogama and Foleyet.

The entire experience, from the work at Queen’s Park to the time spent in the riding, was incredibly fulfilling. It is crucial for Ontarians to understand and appreciate communities across the Province, and working for the people of Northern Ontario was a formative and fulfilling experience. Thank you, MPP Gélinas, for a fantastic placement!
