Christiana Fizet
Christiana Fizet grew up in Ottawa and Lennoxville, Quebec. Her interest in liberal arts took her to Trent University where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science (Honours, High Distinction). After her first year of university, Christiana traveled to South America where she spent the year living in a small indigenous community teaching English and basketball. Upon returning to Trent, she began volunteering at a new Canadians centre in Peterborough and worked for two years as a host, tutor and organizer for new Canadians. While at university, Christiana's interest in politics led her to take part in a number of activities and organizations. She sat on the student government as the Environmental Issues Commissioner in her first year, worked in Fair Trade campaigns, served as a Chair in the Model United Nations symposium, volunteered with Frontier College, and in her last year served as the Vice-President for the Trent University Politics Society and as the fourth year representative on the Department of Political Science board. Her academic interests lie in postcolonial studies, issues of citizenship and multiculturalism, and the interplay of class, race and gender in political uprisings. Her major paper looked at the often-underplayed role of political brokers in revolutions, specifically in the context of the Argentinean food riots of 1989 and 2001. Outside of the classroom, Christiana has cycled many trails, the most exciting having been a trek across Peru, and has hiked thousands of kilometers in Europe, North and South America. She speaks English, French, Spanish and some German. Following the internship, she hopes to pursue a law degree and eventually become a refugee lawyer. She enjoys reading short stories, singing and a good cup of tea.
